How Norway Trains NATO for Winter Warfare

North of the Arctic Circle, in terrain that punishes every piece of equipment and every soldier inside it, Norway is training NATO for one of the most demanding battlefields on earth. This is how the Norwegian Army became the Alliance’s Arctic warfare instructors.

Exercise Cold Response brings together tens of thousands of soldiers from across NATO — but it’s the Norwegians who teach them what survival and combat in the High North truly requires. Steep mountain terrain, limited daylight, and extreme cold demand a fundamentally different approach to military operations.

Norwegian Army forces train year-round in conditions most militaries rarely face. That hard-won expertise is now being passed on to allied nations: US Marines — some of whom had never seen snow — mastered Arctic operations in just three weeks under Norwegian instruction, learning everything from how to use cold-weather clothing and equipment to how to manoeuvre and fight in winter warfare conditions.

In this video, Norwegian and allied forces take us inside Exercise Cold Response in Northern Norway — featuring Captain Aleksander (Norwegian Company Commander), Sergeant Susann, Lieutenant Robin (Norwegian 1st Armoured Battalion), Private Ulrik, and Lieutenant Colonel Chase Bradford (United States Marine Corps).
