COMBAT EXPERIENCE – MILITARY LESSONS FROM THE WAR IN UKRAINE
The onslaught and intensity of the war in Ukraine shocked western Europe – especially as many imagined that such a full-scale war would never happen on European again. The war in Ukraine has also significantly altered perceptions of warfare in the 21st century. Despite the expectations of US and NATO leaders that modern conflicts would be dominated by high-tech precision weapons bringing swift victories, the Ukraine conflict has demonstrated the enduring relevance of conventional tactics and forces.
The fighting in Ukraine has prominently featured elements reminiscent of past wars, including:
- Large-scale armored attacks
- Massed infantry assaults
- Artillery duels
- Trench warfare
But the war in Ukraine has also seen an unprecedented scale and speed of adoption in the use of small, inexpensive, disposable drones for both frontline reconnaissance and surgical attacks against tanks, supply trucks, weapons positions, and even aircraft.
This fusion of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Blade Runner” technologies has created a unique battlefield environment and has been a defining feature of the conflict.
Featuring many first-hand accounts and analyses by European military experts, “Combat Experience – Military Lessons From The War In Ukraine” ( https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/3903526126 ) looks at the current state of the art of war and the lessons learned over the past two years.
