USSOCOM has released the requirement specifications for LMG-A,

the next generation light machine gun intended to replace the MK48 (7.62mm).

The program envisions a multi caliber platform initially covering 7.62×51 NATO and 6.5 Creedmoor with design provisions for potential conversion to 6.8 NGSW and .264 LICC. Key requirements include belt-fed operation, full/semi auto capability, quick change barrel, quick detach suppressor, ambidextrous non reciprocating charging handle, bipod, M-LOK handguard, overall length under 49 inches (with suppressor), and weight under 17 lb.

USSOCOM LMG-A Program

Interestingly, while LMG-A was originally planned around 6.5 Creedmoor, a 7.62mm variant was added. The primary reasons appear to be the slow progress of the 6.5 CM program and the large existing stockpiles of 7.62 NATO ammunition drawing historical parallels to the cancellation of the .276 Pedersen in favor of the surplus .30-06 during the M1 Garand era.

In a significant development USSOCOM has halted in house prototype development of LMG-A. The program is now being transferred from SOF AT&L to the U.S. Navy’s NSWC Crane, where it is expected to be relaunched under new management.
